Learning, unlearning, giving up and trying again

I do not give up easily.  That said, I have given up things in the past. I stopped learning an instrument which I learnt for nine years as a kid but gave up because the teacher was manipulating not just me but people around me. And even though I was only fourteen, I got tired of it. And imagine, the teacher was a nun. She had her good days but she was definitely not my favourite teacher. My second teacher and fourth were my favourites (first was my sister but I she may not remember that). Sadly, I do not play that instrument anymore. I can still read notes, recognise what people play etc. but I cannot play chords, scales and all those things. Maybe if I practice I can, but genuinely I cannot. I hope to get back to it when I live at home some day. But it is lower on my list of priorities. The next thing I quit was something I started doing when I was six and went on till I was eleven/twelve. To be fair, I did do it even before I started formally learning it. Once again, I qu...

Nightmares

I slept at 8 p.m. yesterday (earlier than I have slept in a long time). I slept well until 12 a.m. when I got up for a bit. But then when I fell back asleep and had elaborate dreams of some real happenings in the past along with added horribleness. I dreamt of the singular person I do not ever want to see in my life again. I just don't know how we were ever related and glad that that person exited our lives. I am grateful that I was a little instinctive as a kid and probably kept me away from most rubbish. I don't know why I dreamt of the person, but I was crying in my dream for a long time. I cannot speak about why I dislike the person so much...but I can safely say I never liked the person.  I had other difficult dreams that followed and I woke up at 3 a.m. but slept again and this time well. I got up all better but I just needed to get it completely out of my system.

Letters

I love writing letters. And in this era, emails. That said, I have friends who dislike it immensely for various reasons or plainly because they cannot be bothered. One of such friends sent me an elaborate email yesterday. I was outdoors when I saw it and the mere fact that it was her who sent me this email made me read it twice. Once immediately after receiving it and once again after I got back to my room. While some people have the art, way with words, the craft come naturally to them, some speak their mind. The advantage of evolving into the age of email is probably just that, it is okay to be casual (very casual) in your letters. Making the entire ordeal (for some) of constructing letters less intimidating. I have one letter I haven't mailed out in a long time (so much that now I need to rewrite it) and four more that need to come to life soon. Yesterday's email reminded me of just that. The content of the email was endearing, like a warm hug from someon...

I attract weird happenings. Period.

I was at a coffee shop with a friend of mine who is going to be in town till the end of next month. And we were just catching up. I was telling her about my mad nomad life for the past two years. And she was telling me about my old department. We had barely started talking when this tall girl approached us very politely and asked if I was Indian. And that was a start of a conversation that was close to half an hour long. She was thankfully neither creepy nor did she seem to have ulterior motives (like converting/saving me from going hell). She spoke about how she missed having Indians around and the Indian aunty in her neighbourhood who baby sat all the kids of the neighbourhood at some point or the other. She spoke about her Muslim father and how relieved he was that she hung out with Indian friends (especially in terms of food. Yes I experience this myself when my friends who look for halal see me eat something and decide that if I can eat it, they can too.). She also asked me and ...
